Oral Myiasis: Causes, Treatments, Videos & Photos

What is Myiasis

Myiasis is the parasitic infestation of the body of a live mammal by fly larvae (maggots) that grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue. Although flies are most commonly attracted to open wounds and urine- or feces-soaked fur, some species (including the most common myiatic flies, the botfly, blowfly and screwfly) can create an infestation even on unbroken skin and have been known to use moist soil and non-myiatic flies (such as the common housefly) as vector agents for their parasitic larvae.

Causes Oral Myiasis

Oral myiasis is a rare disease caused by larvae of certain dipteran flies. It is mostly reported in developing countries and in the tropics. Herein, a case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region of a 14-year-old mentally challenged boy is being reported.

Treatment for Oral Myiasis

The larvae are voracious and destroy integral tissues, and may cause serious hemorrhage and be life threatening. Secondary myiasis is that caused by the necrobiophagous flies (feed on dead tissue). Some case report patient with oral myiasis treated successfully with oral ivermectin.
